Flip-flops are easy to wear, which makes them a popular shoe choice for the summer months. Despite their simplicity, they may potentially harm the feet. Many flip-flops are made of flimsy materials and lack adequate cushioning in the heel area. Heel pain may ensue, possibly leading to plantar fasciitis. Pain may also develop in the middle of the arch which may be a symptom of tibial tendonitis. The toes may become cramped from keeping the shoe on the foot, and cause the entire foot to ache. People who enjoy wearing flip-flops may benefit from walking shorter distances in them or limiting the places they are worn. They are ideal shoes to wear to the beach, pool, or locker rooms, but are not suited for other environments. It is beneficial to purchase flip-flops that have a stiff sole, and this may help to provide adequate arch support. If you have questions about how flip-flops can affect the feet, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can provide you with useful information.

Flip-flops can cause a lot of problems for your feet. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from ABC Podiatry. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

Flip-flops have managed to become a summer essential for a lot of people. While the shoes may be stylish and easy to slip on and off, they can be dangerous to those who wear them too often. These shoes might protect you from fungal infections such as athlete’s foot, but they can also give you foot pain and sprained ankles if you trip while wearing them.

When Are They Okay to Wear?

Flip-flops should only be worn for very short periods of time. They can help protect your feet in places that are crawling with fungi, such as gym locker rooms. Athlete’s foot and plantar warts are two common fungi that flip-flops may help protect your feet against.

Why Are They Bad for My Feet?

These shoes do not offer any arch support, so they are not ideal for everyday use. They also do not provide shock absorption or heel cushioning which can be problematic for your feet. Additionally, you may suffer from glass cuts, puncture wounds, and stubbed toes since they offer little protection for your feet.

More Reasons Why They Are Bad for Your Feet

  • They Slow You Down
  • May Cause Blisters and Calluses
  • Expose Your Feet to Bacteria

Morton’s Neuroma and High Heels

Some people feel the sensation of having a small pebble in their sock or shoe, and this can be a symptom of the foot condition known as Morton’s neuroma. It can develop as a result of wearing shoes that do have enough room in the toe area to move freely in. High heels can fall into this category and can affect women who frequently wear this type of shoe. This ailment affects the nerve between the third and fourth toes and can cause severe pain and discomfort. The nerve can become compressed and irritated, and mild relief may be felt when the shoes that are worn have a wider toe box. This condition will not improve when high heels are consistently worn, and surgery may be necessary to remove or repair the nerve. Patients may find some relief when anti-inflammatory medications are taken and the affected foot is massaged. If you have pain in this part of your foot, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can diagnose and treat Moton’s neuroma.

Why Are My Feet Swollen?

The feet are the foundation of the body and are capable of providing adequate balance and support. There are several bones, muscles and tendons that each foot has, and all work together to provide mobility. Patients who stand for long periods may develop edema, which is the medical term for swollen feet. Gravity can cause the blood to pool in the lower legs and feet, and shoes can become tighter. Swollen feet may also be prevalent among pregnant women and people who eat foods with excessive amounts of salt. Swollen feet may be reduced when frequent walking is done and salty foods are reduced. It is helpful to drink plenty of water daily, in addition to wearing compression socks or stockings. Being obese may lead to developing swollen feet, and it is beneficial to eat healthy foods. This may help to reduce or eliminate swollen feet. If your feet have become swollen, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can correctly diagnose and offer treatment options for this problem.

Swollen feet can be a sign of an underlying condition. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of ABC Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:

  • Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
  • Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
  • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.

Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.

Proper Foot Care for Toddlers

The importance of teaching children during their early years about a good foot care routine may be crucial in preventing painful foot conditions as they get older. This can begin with washing and drying the feet daily, and it can help to apply a small amount of powder to their feet. Toddler’s feet may sweat more when they are younger, and this may help to keep them drier. It is beneficial that their feet and toes are kept warm, which may be helpful in maintaining body temperature. A baby’s foot can become stronger when they walk barefoot while indoors. This can be a result of the toes gripping the floor, which can benefit the entire foot. When the first shoes are purchased, it is helpful they are made of flexible materials in addition to having a sturdy sole. This can protect the feet while walking on various surfaces while outside. Some parents may notice an odor that comes from their child’s feet, and medical attention may be sought. It might be indicative that a fungal infection has developed, which can be a common occurrence from the 250,000 sweat glands that are found in the feet. If you would like to have more information about the health of your child’s feet, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who will provide you with useful knowledge.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact one of our podiatrists of ABC Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.
